The UAE Government Media Office has announced a second edition of its AI Film Award, valued at 1 million US dollars, as part of the fifth 1 Billion Followers Summit in Dubai. BytePlus, the enterprise technology arm of ByteDance, is the technology partner, while TikTok is supporting the wider initiative. The summit is scheduled for 8 to 10 January 2027.
The award places generative video and AI-assisted storytelling inside a national creator-economy programme. Its themes include science and discovery, civilisations and empires, culture and traditions, inventions and human ingenuity, turning points in history, and lost or forgotten stories. The structure is designed to encourage creators to use AI to develop narrative work rather than treating the technology only as a production shortcut.
The initiative is also commercially relevant. BytePlus provides API access to ByteDance’s Dreamina Seedance video-generation model, connecting the award to a broader ecosystem of creative software, model access and distribution platforms. TikTok’s involvement gives the programme a route to global audiences, but it also makes provenance, consent, copyright and disclosure important editorial questions.
The announcement does not say that all submitted films will be generated entirely by AI, nor does it establish how entries will be evaluated for originality, training-data concerns, likeness rights or human contribution. Those rules will determine whether the award becomes a credible experiment in responsible creative AI or simply a promotional showcase.
For the UAE, the award strengthens a strategy of positioning Dubai as a meeting point for creators, technology companies, investors and global platforms. The event’s relevance extends beyond entertainment: generative video is becoming a test case for how governments and industries define authorship, intellectual property and acceptable disclosure when software participates directly in the creative process.
The strongest follow-up coverage will examine the competition rules, judging framework, rights model and winning work. For now, the verified development is the launch of a large, UAE-backed creative AI prize with major platform partners and a defined January 2027 timetable.
